  • Close up of Ankh-Morpork on Cormo yarn Two skeins of "Ankh-Morpork" with a crochet and knit swatch
We had a lot of fun collaborating with Third Vault Yarns for this year's Open Day Special yarn!

Third Vault Yarns are inspired by fantasy and sci-fi. When deciding on what theme to go with, Lola listed numerous fantasy series, all of which I haven't read! We finally realised that we both enjoyed Terry Pratchett's Discworld, and love the original cover art from the books.

We dyed two different yarn bases:
50% Corriedale 50% Mohair - this yarn has all the lustre and drape you'd expect from its constituent fibres and that beautiful fuzzy halo too.
100% Cormo wool - a bouncy 4 ply / fingering weight that is soft and smooth. This is the one used in the swatches.
Both yarns are 400m per 100g skein.
  • Close up of Hocus Crocus on Nene 4 Ply Skeins of Nene 4 Ply in the Hocus Crocus colourway
Who doesn't love spring? All the colours of fresh new leaves and blooms can be found in this colourway. Becci wrote a blog post about it here. The yarn is gently variegated and that makes it a lot of fun to work with because every stitch is different. The colours blend beautifully in the finished project as you can see in the knit and crochet samples. You can use this for textured as well as simple patterns.

Fibre Content: 100% Bluefaced Leicester Wool
    Specification: 4 ply / fingering weight - 400m / 100g

  • Close up of Aysgarth in the Excalibur colourway Skeins of Aysgarth in the Excalibur colourway
    Fibre Content: 100% Wensleydale Wool
    Specification: 4 ply / fingering weight - 350m / 100g
    Fibre: Sourced in the UK

Recommended needle & hook size: 2.0mm - 3.75mm (always check the pattern)

Aysgarth is 100% lustrous British Wensleydale wool. Its appearance is similar to the shine and the halo of mohair and it feels like a warm woolly hug. Seriously, you won't be able to stop stroking this yarn! It comes from sheep who have amazing long curly locks and it is a hand dyer's favourite for its colour uptake. The yarn is worsted spun and plied, and has a draping handle, making it ideal for statement pieces. Remember to always block your projects for the best outcome. Please note that this is a non-superwash yarn, so it can be felted if you want.

  • Knit and crochet samples of Honey Sunrise Skeins of Honey Sunrise

    Honey Sunrise – Nene 4 Ply 100g

    GBP £22.00
One of those magical, otherworldly sunrises inspired this colourway. Honey coloured autumn leaves were hanging over the canalside and the pink, violet, and blue sky was reflected in the water. Stunning. The yarn is gently variegated and that makes it a lot of fun to work with because every stitch is different. The colours blend beautifully in the finished project as you can see in the knit and crochet samples. You can use this for textured as well as simple patterns.

  • Close up of skeins in zesty green with pops of yellow and purple Skeins of Nene 4 Ply in zesty greens with pops of yellow and purple
We created this colourway partly out of longing for summer after the rather wet and cold spring of 2021, and partly due to the kids bringing that oh-so-annoying phrase out of hibernation since we’ve been coming out of lockdown and travelling further afield! This colourway is moderately variegated and that makes it a lot of fun to work with because almost every stitch is a different colour. Textured patterns will show up in this yarn, alternatively, use it for something simple and let the colours do the work!

The marvellous mill folk at John Arbon Textiles are celebrating their 20th anniversary and you’re all invited! Part of the festivities includes the launch of their Appledore yarn, and we were delighted that they asked us and Third Vault Yarns to dye some limited edition shades for the event.

As Appledore is all about glorious West Country apples, Lola (Third Vault Yarns) looked slightly further afield - out into intergalactic space, in fact! She is a big sci-fi fan and has created shades inspired by tropical fruits which are often used as props in sci-fi films and TV shows - we just love the idea, and would well recommend googling a Kiwano if you're not familiar! Instead of zooming off into future realms, we stayed right here, inspired by the West Country but travelled back in time to the mythical court of Arthurian legends. Purple was a royal colour in the Middle Ages. Can’t you just imagine lady Guinevere wearing a garment in Excalibur? And Avalon is giving us all the lady in the lake feels... and as serendipity would have it, Avalon and Excalibur are both heritage varieties of plum trees, yum.

So without further ado, we’d love to present you with not one, not two, but four glorious shades inspired by nature's bounty with a playful twist that is out of this world. We just love the way all four shades play together and would love a big old stripy sweater...

  • Lake Bacalar from the shore. There is a palm tree in the foreground and the water graduates from light, bright aqua to deep blue. A pile of skeins of Laguna de Bacalar, an aqua / blue colourway

Laguna de Bacalar – Nene 4 Ply 100g

    GBP £22.00
Chris and Bek are part of the extended RiverKnits family and they designed this fresh and funky limited edition colourway, based on a special holiday memory! They showed us beautiful photos of Lake Bacalar from their travels around Mexico and we dyed yarn to match. Lake Bacalar is often referred to as the “lagoon of seven colours” due to the number of striking aquas and blues in the famously clear waters. It’s also home to one of the oldest living organisms; stromatolites, basically layers of rock formed by cyanobacteria. Very very cool.
This is a limited edition colourway and will be available while stocks last.

On The Cut – Nene 4 Ply 100g

    GBP £22.00
The Cut is an old boating term for the canal, because it is cut (or dug) into the landscape. So "on the cut" means cruising on the canal, and the colours are reflected in this yarn. Sky blue, white fluffy clouds, and the green-brown sliver of the water. Although quite highly variegated, the colours are light and will allow textured patterns to shine through while lending visual interest to simple ones. The gentle colours blend beautifully in the finished project.

  • A group of 4 skeins in rich brown, navy blue, teal, and green A skein of Severn 4 Ply in dark navy blue

    Haul Away – Severn 4 Ply 50g

    GBP £9.00
Fibre Content: 100% British Jacob wool
    Specification: 4 Ply / Fingering weight - 175m / 50g
    Fibre: Sourced from Worcestershire, UK
Processing: Spun in Ceridigion, Wales, dyed in the UK
Recommended needle & hook size: 2.5mm - 3.75mm (always check the pattern)

This is a light and airy woollen-spun and plied yarn from a single farm in Worcestershire. Jacob sheep are one of the oldest native breeds in the UK. They are striking in their appearance, with white and brown fleeces and multiple horns! We sorted the fleeces by hand, separating the white from the brown. We have natural and dyed shades available. The wool is hardwearing and makes lightweight, warm garments that soften beautifully with age. Use it for hats, mittens, jumpers, and house socks and slippers. The yarn is made up of 2 plies, which lends itself well to lace patterns and stranded colourwork. This yarn hasn’t been superwash-treated, so it will felt if you want it to. This also makes it an excellent candidate for steeking, if you’re brave enough!
