The marvellous mill folk at John Arbon Textiles are celebrating their 20th anniversary and you’re all invited! Part of the festivities includes the launch of their Appledore yarn, and we were delighted that they asked us and Third Vault Yarns to dye some limited edition shades for the event.

As Appledore is all about glorious West Country apples, Lola (Third Vault Yarns) looked slightly further afield – out into intergalactic space, in fact! She is a big sci-fi fan and has created shades inspired by tropical fruits which are often used as props in sci-fi films and TV shows – we just love the idea, and would well recommend googling a Kiwano if you’re not familiar! Instead of zooming off into future realms, we stayed right here, inspired by the West Country but travelled back in time to the mythical court of Arthurian legends. Purple was a royal colour in the Middle Ages. Can’t you just imagine lady Guinevere wearing a garment in Excalibur? And Avalon is giving us all the lady in the lake feels… and as serendipity would have it, Avalon and Excalibur are both heritage varieties of plum trees, yum.

So without further ado, we’d love to present you with not one, not two, but four glorious shades inspired by nature’s bounty with a playful twist that is out of this world. We just love the way all four shades play together and would love a big old stripy sweater…

Description

All the fibre in the new Appledore range is sourced from close by the mill in the West country and perfectly encapsulates the John Arbon Textiles ethos. Like all their yarns, Appledore is steeped in our fibre heritage (all hail those vintage machines of theirs). They have blended together Devon Closewool, a moorland breed with rustic and grippy fibre, with lustrous and characterful Romney and an old favourite, the gloriously bouncy Exmoor Blueface. The resulting blend is packed full of woolly bounce and a smattering of lustre, the perfect canvas for Appledore’s range of playful modern shades. To see the full range of heathered colours, head over to John Arbon Textiles.

This yarn is two fold DK, with a distinctive rustic halo (the handle is a little reminiscent of a Shetland yarn). The resulting fabric has wonderfully warm woolly halo and a full-bodied texture. Because of this halo and its two-ply nature, the resulting yarn can be worked at both a tight and looser gauge, as the halo of fibres will simply expand to fill in any gaps around the stitches. With Appledore JAT have created a durable workhorse yarn which is pill resistant and ideally suited for everyday wear – be that in garments or accessories. Although all worsted spun yarns have a lot of drape, this blend has slightly less than the majority of their yarns, giving it a cosy heirloom feel. This composition also has the added bonus of increased grip and texture from the more rustic breeds, making it one of their grippiest bases.

Please note that although all our photographs have been taken in daylight conditions with a digital SLR camera, computer monitors and other colour screen displays vary widely, so the colours may appear differently in real life to how they do on screen.

Caring for your yarn:
When it comes to blocking or washing your project, use lukewarm water with your favourite wool wash, and lay flat to dry. This yarn has been professionally hand dyed, but differing water temperatures and hardness can cause some dye to bleed. If you’re using it in a multicoloured project, we recommend washing a swatch first to test for colour-fastness.
